Liposuction can smooth out the contours of the body, flattening the stomach, slimming hips and thighs, sculpting calves and ankles, or eliminating a double chin. If you have been bothered by particular areas of your body that you just can't tone, no matter how much you exercise, or how healthy you eat, liposuction may provide the answer.
The best candidate for liposuction is someone who:
Typical results vary depending on the individual, but you should find that your clothes fit better and you may be one to two sizes smaller than before surgery. Even though only relatively small volumes of fat are removed, the reshaping of the body is usually enough to create the illusion of noticeable weight loss. An added bonus for patients is that they are often more motivated to lead a healthy lifestyle to maintain their weight and many patients have reported improved self-esteem and confidence.
As effective as liposuction is, it is important to have realistic expectations about what liposuction can achieve. Liposuction is not a weight loss remedy. You will weigh a little bit less than you did before having liposuction, depending on how much fat is removed, but liposuction can only smooth out the shape of your body; it can't produce a radical transformation. Your surgeon will guide you on what is achievable.
Once they are removed, fat cells don't grow back, so the results you achieve with liposuction are long-lasting, provided you maintain a healthy weight. If you do gain weight after liposuction, the treated areas will stay about the same, but you will develop excess fat in other parts of your body.
An experienced and qualified plastic surgeon is the best person to speak to about whether or not you are a good candidate for liposuction surgery, but generally anyone who is allergic to anaesthetic, or has a pre-existing medical condition that makes surgery too risky, should not consider liposuction as an option. If you are significantly overweight, your surgeon may suggest that you reduce your weight before having liposuction to reduce the risk of complications from the surgery.
Liposuction is a really effective method for removing stubborn areas of excess fat that can't be eliminated with diet and exercise. There are some medical conditions that may prevent you from having liposuction, and it can't treat other issues like cellulite and stretch marks, but in general liposuction will produce great results for the right candidate.
