Choosing the right surgeon for your surgery is the most critical decision you need to consider. You are, after all literally putting your body in their hands. You should choose a Surgeon with whom you feel comfortable and who has significant experience in performing breast augmentation surgery and breast reconstructive surgery.

In Australia, any medical doctor can perform cosmetic surgical procedures without undergoing specialist plastic surgical training. We have seen the disastrous outcomes from this in the media.

Plastic and Reconstructive surgery requires several years of specialist training in a dedicated training program after the completion of a basic medical degree.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR SURGEON

You should look for doctors who are plastic surgical Fellows of one of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons, including the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and Royal College of Surgeons of England. Such Fellows have completed post graduate training in plastic surgery and work under strict professional and ethical guidelines. However, training in plastic surgery does not necessarily mean training in cosmetic surgery, so always specifically ask your surgeon if they have undertaken dedicated training in cosmetic surgery.

In Australia, the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery is the only College that offers formal training and accreditation in cosmetic medicine and surgery. If the Surgeon you visit doesn’t have their qualifications on display, ask to see them.

Choosing a Surgeon with these professional qualifications makes it more likely that you will get a result you are happy with and will potentially reduce the risk of complications.

Mr Patrick Tansley

Mr Patrick Tansley is registered in the UK as a Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon. He is now living in Australia where he practises cosmetic (aesthetic) surgery in Melbourne and Brisbane under general registration as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

Patrick obtained the UK’s highest qualification in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (College), in 2010 and has been on the Specialist Register in the UK since 2011. He was awarded his Master of Science in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery degree with distinction from the University of London in 2013.

Dr Sugitha Seneviratne

Dr Sugitha Seneviratne is an Australian trained Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon. She completed her undergraduate qualifications at Monash University in 1993 and after ten years of Melbourne-based post-graduate training, became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2003 and a Fellow of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery in 2015.

Sugitha is highly trained and experienced in all aspects of plastic surgery ranging from cosmetic surgery to microsurgery. She is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and was Head of Plastic, Maxillofacial and Hand Surgery Unit at the Northern Hospital for five years. In addition, Sugitha holds the positions of Honorary Clinical Fellow, Department of Surgery, Royal Melbourne Hospital and has held the position of Executive Director of Clinical Governance (part time), Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Since 2008, Sugitha has been the Plastic Surgical representative to the Medical Advisory Committee at Cotham Private Hospital. Sugitha has a special interest and significant experience in cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery and cosmetic surgery of the face in addition to skin cancer surgery and hand surgery.

Dr Seneviratne holds professional memberships of the Cosmetic Physicians College of Australasia and the Australian Medical Association.
