Am I A Candidate For Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast augmentation is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in Australia. It is quite low risk when performed by a qualified surgeon and the satisfaction rate is high, with most women reporting that they love the size and shape of their new breasts and that they felt more attractive and less self-conscious.

If you have been wondering if breast augmentation is the right procedure for you, this article examines what makes someone a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery.

Reasons To Consider Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast implant surgery can improve a woman's self-confidence and self-esteem and increase overall satisfaction with their body. There are many reasons why a woman might choose to undergo breast augmentation surgery. The most common reasons include:

  • to feel more feminine or to improve the way their clothes fit
  • to improve body proportions and make their shape more balanced
  • to provide symmetry and to address uneven or lopsided breasts
  • to restore volume after pregnancy and breastfeeding or significant weight loss
  • reconstruction after mastectomy

Who Is A Good Candidate For Breast Augmentation?

The best candidates for breast augmentation are those who may be unhappy or self-conscious about the size, shape or degree of droop of their breasts but are otherwise healthy and well-adjusted and don't expect the surgery to transform their lives.

When Is Breast Augmentation Not A Suitable Option?

Breast augmentation surgery needs to be carefully considered if you have any health conditions which can increase the risks of surgery or a general anaesthetic. Your surgeon will consider these risks and advise you of the benefits and risks of proceeding with surgery given your particular circumstances.

Breast augmentation surgery is generally performed in adult patients after the completion of breast development. Where surgery is considered on younger patients, the surgeon may seek psychological evaluation to establish the patient’s level of psychological maturity.

What Are The Risks and Potential Complications?

All surgery carries some risks or potential complications such as infection, excessive bleeding, blood clots in the legs or lungs, poor wound healing or scarring and reactions to the anaesthetic. These risks can be minimised if you are in good general health and follow your surgeon's pre and post-operative instructions.

Potential complications following breast augmentation surgery include:

  • loss of nipple sensation can occur in up to 10% of patients after surgery and the risk of numbness in the nipples reduces to 1-2% by 12 months after surgery
  • capsular contracture which occurs when scar tissue forms around the implant. The scar tissue can contract, compressing the implant and making the breast feel firm or appear unnatural in shape
  • wrinkling or folding of the breast or visibility of the breast implant under the skin
  • asymmetry resulting in the breasts appearing uneven which may require additional surgery to restore symmetry
  • implant rupture due to a tear in the external silicone shell although the cohesive silicone gel is generally contained within the capsule around the implant

The decision to undergo breast augmentation surgery is deeply personal, whether it is for reconstructive or cosmetic reasons. Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure with inherent risks and the best person to discuss your requirements and expectations with is an experienced and qualified surgeon.

The best way to reduce the risk of complications is to choose an experienced surgeon who has performed lots of breast augmentation procedures.
