What Is Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Nose surgery, also known as rhinoplasty, nose reshaping or a 'nose job', aims to improve the size, shape and symmetry of a person's nose so it is in balance with their other facial features. Most people consider nose surgery a purely cosmetic procedure, but nose surgery is also done for medical reasons to correct breathing difficulties and excessive snoring. All enquiries are treated in strict confidence including enquiries regarding botched facelift surgery second opinion consultations.

A nose that is out of proportion with the rest of the face can dominate a person's appearance, making them self conscious. Rhinoplasty can correct birth defects, a broken nose that has never healed properly or damage from an accident. Cosmetic rhinoplasty can transform the way a person feels about themselves.

Nose surgery involves reshaping the bone, cartilage or skin to reduce the length, width or overall size of the nose, reduce the size of the nostrils, or remove bumps, lumps, depressions, deviations and asymmetry. Depending on what changes need to be made, the surgery can be either:

  • Open - a small cut is made under the tip of the nose between the nostrils, allowing the surgeon to peel back the skin to access the bone and cartilage. Open surgery is used for more complex reshaping, and the scar will be well hidden by the natural contours of the nose.
  • Closed - if only minor reshaping is needed, the cuts are made inside the nostril. The surgeon separates the skin from the supporting bone and cartilage to reshape the underlying structure. There are no visible scars from this procedure.

If required, the surgeon may use cartilage removed from other areas, such as the septum, ear or rib to help maintain the new shape. Once the underlying structure of the nose is sculpted, the nasal skin and tissue will be smoothed over the bone and cartilage, and the incisions closed. A cast or splint is applied to support and protect the nose.
