How To Minimise The Risk Of Breast Augmentation Surgery

If you have been considering breast augmentation, you've probably used the internet to do some research. No doubt you've been advised to 'do your homework', but what exactly does that mean?

In Australia, the demand for cosmetic surgical services is high and the industry isn't as regulated as other areas of medical practice. As a result, the industry's reputation has suffered because consumers aren't getting the quality they should expect. It pays to do your homework in choosing a surgeon to perform your breast augmentation - the choice of surgeon has a significant impact on how happy you will be with the final outcome.

In this article, we offer advice on what to focus on when making your decision regarding breast augmentation surgery in Melbourne or Brisbane, in order to minimise potential risk and complications.

Doing Your Homework

Once you have looked at a few websites it becomes hard to tell the difference between one surgeon and another, so how do you choose?

It is important to have an initial consultation with a surgeon rather than their staff in order to establish the surgeon’s qualifications and so you that you can direct your questions to the surgeon. You should be able to find out the total cost of the procedure after your consultation. Ideally, you should choose a surgeon who you feel comfortable with and who has lots of experience in performing breast augmentation or reconstruction. Remember that you get what you pay for, so try not to be tempted to choose the surgeon with the lowest price.

What Qualifications To Look For

Plastic surgical Fellows of one of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons, including the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and Royal College of Surgeons of England have completed post graduate training in plastic surgery and work under strict professional and ethical guidelines. However, training in plastic surgery does not necessarily mean training in cosmetic surgery, so it is important to establish whether your surgeon has undertaken dedicated training in cosmetic surgery. In Australia, the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery is the only College that offers formal training and accreditation in cosmetic medicine and surgery.

If the Surgeon you consult doesn’t have their qualifications on display, you should ask to see them.

Choosing a Surgeon with these professional qualifications makes it more likely that you will get a result you are happy with and will potentially reduce the risk of complications.

The Surgeons of NorthEast Plastic Surgery have undergone rigorous surgical training and their expertise is the result of extensive experience in cosmetic plastic surgery.

Twilight Sedation

Our Surgeons do not recommend the twilight sedation technique due to safety concerns and our practice does not use twilight sedation for breast augmentation as it has been associated with adverse clinical outcomes. The technique involves the use of local anaesthetic used in combination with a sedative resulting in a ‘dream-like’ state.

At NorthEast Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is performed under a general anaesthetic administered by a Specialist Anaesthetist in an accredited hospital.

Medical Tourism

An increasing number of Australian women are choosing to go overseas to have breast augmentation surgery. The main reasons are the lower costs. Others like the idea of combining a holiday with a new look or because they like the anonymity of having the surgery where they won't run into someone they know while they are recovering from the procedure. While tempting, bear in mind that the recovery time after your surgery is as critically important as the surgery itself. If you develop an infection, bleed internally or if the wounds aren't healing properly it is difficult to get these issues resolved if your doctor is in another country. The aftercare process is critical not only to avoid complications but also to achieve an optimal outcome.

Breast augmentation is a commonly performed surgical procedure, but all surgery carries some degree of risk and although serious complications from breast augmentation aren't common, they do occur. Choosing a surgeon with the appropriate qualifications and experience in performing breast augmentation is the best way to minimise your risk of complications and to ensure you are happy with your new look.
