Why Consider Rhinoplasty Surgery?

People have nasal surgery for a variety of reasons. It may be to undertaken to address a structural problem where you have difficulty breathing or suffer from snoring which can affect the quality of your sleep and that of your partner. It may also be undertaken to address damage caused by an accident which has altered the way your nose looks and works.

Most people have nasal surgery for aesthetic reasons. A nose which is out of balance or not in proportion with the other facial features can become the most noticeable thing about your face. Even a small change to the shape and size of the nose can have a dramatic effect on a person's appearance. Patients report improvements in their self-confidence and self-esteem after nasal surgery.

Am I A Candidate For Rhinoplasty Surgery?

The best person to speak to about whether rhinoplasty surgery is an option for you is a qualified and experienced surgeon. Patients who are good candidates for nasal surgery are those who are in general good health, have completed facial growth and have realistic expectations about what surgery can achieve. It is worthwhile considering nasal surgery in the following circumstances:

  • If you have breathing problems
  • If your nose looks too big or too wide for your face and overwhelms your facial features
  • If your nose has a prominent bump or nasal hump
  • If your nasal tip is wide or droopy
  • If you have excessively flared nostrils
  • If your nose is crooked
  • If you are otherwise self-conscious or unhappy with how your nose looks

What Changes Can I Make?

Rhinoplasty and/or Septoplasty surgery can improve the appearance and function of the nose by:

  • Reducing nasal length
  • Refining nasal width
  • Making the nose itself or the nostrils look smaller
  • Straightening or decreasing the size of the nasal dorsum and nasal bridge
  • Improving the degree of nasal tip droop or refining the tip of the nose
  • Removing bumps, asymmetry, depressions and deviations on the nose
  • Correcting breathing problems by opening up blocked nasal passages

If you are considering having nasal surgery, think about why it is important to you and what changes you wish to make to the appearance of your nose. As nasal surgery is permanent, you should only make the decision to undergo surgery once you know the benefits and risks of rhinoplasty surgery. An experienced surgeon can provide advice on your options and guide you in regard to results which are realistic and achievable.
